Did you watch all of the Academy Awards?

With another Oscar season over, and some of the complainers spouting how it was the night for Hollywood to say “Look how important we are!”, it was also a night of consistently one of the most watched television events. A lot of people watch their TV’s wondering who some of the nominees are, many have never heard of the films that are either nominated, or win for that matter, yet, for some reason, every year, we gather around our televisions, and this year we might have gathered around our handheld devices because ABC was streaming the Academy Awards to their app, as long as you actually subscribe to a specific cable provider, which I find bassakward because really, don’t you want as many eyes as possible watching so you can shove commercials down people’s eyeballs?

As it is, though, we watch. We get sucked into the red carpet, we wake up the next morning wondering who won, and then don’t really care, and the marketing blitz hits for those “non-mainstream” movies that win big, as now it’s a movie you “must” see because the people that rate Hollywood found it important.

Some years I make it all the way through the telecast, commenting like many of you, and some years I fall asleep. I can’t remember, though, any year I’ve never actually just skipped watching the Oscars altogether. As I type this the jury is still out if I will keep my eyes open this year, but I wonder: Did you watch all of the Academy Awards?

Stu Gotz finally got the family to Florida to see Space Shuttle Discovery take off, and during this “Weekend Wrap-Up!” podcast, he gives some space shuttle facts for all to enjoy. What I didn’t enjoy, Stu found acceptable, and Mama Gotz found that it was more fun to watch “Minute to Win It” instead, was The Oscars, and as the various Academy Awards were given out, I tell Stu that the Twitterverse was much more exciting and funny than the actual broadcast.

On the movie front, while not my official review of “Bambi” which is out on Blu-ray on March 1st, we discuss “Bambi” and how it reflects how times have changed and how kids are probably growing up faster than us old-farts did. We also discuss, a bit, how movie-making has changed, with Stu bringing up the “True Grit” remake versus the original John Wayne version, and how he was happy “Megamind” was out on video.

I took a nap, my BFF made tuna noodle casserole, I’m sick of the crappy weather, but we don’t talk about Charlie Sheen, which seems oddly weird for us.

Academy Award Talk, We Saw Alice in Wonderland, a Lazy Sunday, and Ghost Ships in Milwaukee!

I’m tired, and during our "Weekend Wrap-Up!" podcast I tell Stu Gotz that I’m blaming the Academy Awards. Yup, the both of us watched pretty much all of the Oscar telecast, and we pretty much agreed on a lot of things, including who won some of the awards and that there was some wacked-out dudette who now has perpetuated the term "Kanye Moment" when she tried to upstage the dude who was giving the speech when Best short something-or-other won an award. So, yes, our podcast has tons of commentary about the Academy Awards telecast, and we even discuss some fashion!

It was a nice weekend for me, especially Sunday when I accomplished absolutely nothing, and Stu had a nice weekend as well, giving a talk up in Milwaukee, WI, for the Ghost Ships Festival. We both were able to see "Alice in Wonderland" and disagree about the use of 3-D in the movie but not about the movie itself, Stu wants everyone to watch Academy Award winning documentary "The Cove," and I’m looking forward to maybe catching "She’s Out of My League" next weekend while Stu doesn’t even seem to know what it is.

Thanks for listening!
