Sure the teaser trailer doesn’t show a damn thing, in fact all it does is show the Batman logo with some audio between Alfred and Bruce Wayne, but we do know that Heath Ledger is taking the role as Joker, Aaron Eckhart is going to be Harvey Dent the District Attorney, and Maggie Gyllenhaal is taking over the role of Rachel Dawes from Katie, I mean Kate Holmes. The movie is almost a year away as I write this initial preview, the filming is currently going on in Chicago (I actually witnessed a truck with one of the Joker’s henchman in it a month or so back), and as long as the film folks keep things serious, like the “Batman Returns” movie, which I really liked but never did write a review, I think things should be fine.

More will come as we get closer to the film release date, but even without seeing anything from the film, I’m already looking forward to writing “The Dark Knight” review.

This looks like a movie my sister will probably will like, and you know what that means, I will probably not like it so much. You get a bunch of kids at a dilapidated day camp, you don’t know how to run a day camp, things start to go bad really fast, and somehow competitions have to take place. Sure, the kids will probably learn how to get along, the camp will turn around, and all will be well in day camp-land, but this really looks like a movie for the 6 years olds, and my sister.

Déjà vu
Movie Stats & Links
Starring: Denzel Washington, Val Kilmer
MPAA Rated: PG-13
Released By: Toucstone Picures
Release Date: 2006
Directed By: Tony Scott

Denzel Washington is Doug. He’s an ATF agent investigating a case, only all of a sudden it is cases of déjà vu that start to lead our hero, Doug, through his crack investigating and hoping to solve a case before more bad stuff happens.

Sure, the premise sounds kind of goofy, but Tony Scott is directing, from “Man on Fire” and “Enemy of the State” fame, and Jerry Bruckheimer is producing so that usually means some good action, and Denzel is the lead, and he usually seems to have a good eye for exciting, thrilling scripts. I am looking for the next trailer before I see where this ends up on my viewing calendar, but right now the right people are involved.

(DOTR Update: I just saw the next trailer for this movie and now I’m not so excited. Why? Because the déjà vu that Doug is supposedly able to experience is due to some crazy government project that can see, transport you, feed you memories in the past of events that have already happened. I would have preferred if they just kept the original idea of déjà vu a reality, and not some wacky science project.)

Honestly, does it really even matter what I put here for a preview. All I’ve really been able to find out is that James Bond is fighting bad people in Korea and Iceland. It’s got Halle Berry, I hope it’s rated R so that Halle might get naked and the violence will be better, but this looks to be your typical Bond flick where he gets the ladies, has cool cars and gadgets, and always looks dapper in his tuxedo.

I’ll catch this one no matter what I hear because I’m a fan of James Bond, and prefer my martinis shaken, not stirred.

Do we really need a remake of this movie? I guess we’ll see if they can improve on the original, but here’s the story in a nutshell.

A strange plague has taken over the land and now corpses walk around looking for humans to eat their brains, suck their blood, and pretty much just kill them. So now the dead become zombies themselves and humanity might all be lost. As things go bad, a group of people find themselves in the shelter of the local mall, but soon the zombies realize the last bastion of humanity is trying on clothes at The Gap. So the zombies try to break in, our saviors for humanity try to keep them out, they realize their only hope is to make a run for it and get to remote island, I guess hoping that the zombies don’t know how to paddle a boat.

We’ll see what else it coming out this weekend, but this isn’t high on my list of movies to catch. Who knows, it might be fun and have some decent quality kills, or at least some living nudity.

Did You Hear About the Morgans
Movie Stats & Links
Starring: Sarah Jessica Parker, Hugh Grant
MPAA Rated: PG-13
Released By: Columbia Pictures
Release Date: 2009
Directed By: Marc Lawrence

Let’s see, Sarah Jessica Parker and Hugh Grant play a married couple who are having marriage problems and things aren’t going well. They are also true city folks, living in The Big Apple, New York City. Just when things can’t get better for them, and maybe they are really heading for the skids, well, they witness a murder, enter witness protection, and get shipped off to Wyoming where hilarity is supposed to ensue because they are a city couple who doesn’t get along transplanted to a small town.

Here’s the thing, I’m not that big a Sarah Jessica Parker fan, although I do admit I like her in “Sex and the City,” and Hugh Grant I can take or leave, but the story is a retread of a hundred other stories, so unless the writing on this is utterly great, the only reason you will be seeing this movie is because A) “Avatar” is sold out or B) you owe your significant other a romantic movie and “Avatar” is sold out. I’m not holding out too much hope for this film, but it will probably be a nice DVD rental down the road.

Drillbit Taylor
Movie Stats & Links
Starring: Alex Frost, Josh Peck, Owen Wilson, Leslie Mann
MPAA Rated: PG-13
Released By: Paramount Pictures
Release Date: 2008
Directed By: Steven Brill

This trailer really made me laugh, and with Judd Apatow involved, there is a lot potential for this movie, and instead of teens at the end of their high school years (ala “Superbad”), Drillbit Taylor gives us life from a Freshman perspective, from three dudes getting bullied like there is no end. What to do for them – Put out an ad for a bodyguard. And who is the bodyguard they can afford? – Well it’s Drillbit Taylor (Owen Wilson), who infiltrates the high school to protect them and works to give them all kinds of pointers on how to stick up for themselves, as well as grow up.

As much as the high school seniors in “Superbad” were fantastic, these Freshmen look even better. I’m just curious as to what the rating of this movie will be. Not that I really care, because I’ll be there anyway, because I can totally relate.

Even though I’m not really sure about the story, I do know it’s based on a Stephen King novel and that’s usually good enough for me to go and see the film. The trailer seems to show some dudes who have some weird powers, out on a hunting trip in a blizzard. Then let’s throw in some alien invasion where Morgan Freeman is hell-bent on making sure the aliens get killed, even if it means killing everyone inside the perimeter.

In any case “Dreamcatcher” looks like a good suspense film, with some horror, action, and violence. I’m just hoping it get an R rating meaning the horror, action, and violence are at the level they should be.

Drag Me to Hell
Movie Stats & Links
Starring: Alison Lohman, Justin Long, Lorna Raven
MPAA Rated: PG-13
Released By: Universal Pictures
Release Date: 2009
Directed By: Sam Raimi

So you’ve got this dudette, Christine, and she works at a bank. An old lady needs some help with her loan, but hey, the girl wants to get ahead in the eyes of her boss and bam, the lady gets turned down. Turns out this isn’t such a great idea as the lady puts some kind of curse on Christine.

Christine’s life is now crap, and she is destined for hell, unless she can reverse the curse. And so Christine enlists some help, her boyfriend doesn’t understand, and hopefully she can be all good again and end up in heaven, or at least live a happy life.

The news about this movie is that Sam Raimi is back doing horror movies, but what bums me out is that it’s going to be rated PG-13 so it will be low on the gore fest

The Departed
Movie Stats & Links
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Martin Sheen, Mark Wahlberg, Alec Baldwin
MPAA Rated: R
Released By: Warner Bros.
Release Date: 2006
Directed By: Martin Scorsese

I guess this is a remake of some big Asian film from a few year’s back, but if it gets released on its tentative date, October 6th, Oscar buzz will already start hitting this film if only because Martin Scorsese is directing and it’s got a great cast of Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Martin Sheen, Mark Wahlberg, Alec Baldwin. From what I can gather you get the Irish-American mafia infiltrating the Boston police department, and the Boston police department infiltrating the Irish-American mafia, and they all have their allegiances both to who they’re spying on and who they’re spying for.

Right now the movie looks to be very entertaining, and it’s rated R for three great reasons in my book, strong brutal violence, pervasive language, some strong sexual content and as an added bonus, drug material.

Scorsese’s got the track record, especially when it comes to movies like this, so I doubt he’ll screw it up.
