You’ll see it because it has Tom Hanks. That might be the only reason. Here you’ve got the story of a dude who gets on a Fed Ex plane, the plane goes down, he ends up stranded on a desert island, and unlike the TV show “Survivor,” this dude is left alone to figure out how to make shelter, find food, and make fire. His survivor challenge is simply to stay alive. On the island he seems to have two friends – his pocket watch with a picture of the woman he loves and a volleyball which he colors to look like a face. He finally gets sick of the island, builds a raft, heads back out to sea, is found, and looks to find out what happened to the years he missed.

This looks like a movie that will see if Tom Hanks can carry a movie all on his own, especially when I’ve heard that about an hour of the movie is Tom Hanks on the island.

If he can make the movie it should get him another Oscar nod, and if not, well, we’ll just wait till the next one. No matter what he does he is always in the running.

Heath Ledger is Casanova. Hooray. Really, there’s not much more to say about this film. The trailer shows that Casanova falls for another dudette, yet she puts off his advances. Not good news for Casanova’s rep, but maybe he wants more in a relationship this time, instead of just being Casanova. Looks like an R-rated movie for the dudettes to me, for us dudes, all we can home for is that it’s Sienna Miller that gets naked and not Oliver Platt.

Blindness
Movie Stats & Links
Starring: Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo
MPAA Rated: R

So we’ve got a creepy movie where people are suddenly going blind, and now it just might be up to Julianne Moore, I think, to figure out what the hell is going on. Social order breaks down, with people not being able to see of course, but if she is the only person who is able to see, and sure she might love her husband, wouldn’t it just be easier for her to just get the hell out of town?

The movie does have a more artsy side to it, at least for the trailer, and I’m assuming Julianne doesn’t bolt town because she loves her husband, that and it looks like the government seals off the town, but maybe that now all of these blind people are getting super-human hearing because they can’t see, and maybe they can sense Julianne can see.

The movie is in the middle of the Fall movie season and it looks creepy enough, and sometimes I’m all about a creepy movie. We’ll see what opens against it, but I might try to catch “Blindness” if it hits my gigaplex.

Who would have thought Will Smith could play Mohammed Ali? Not I. But as I watch the trailers for this movie it looks like Will can pull this off, and can pull this off is such a way that it will be one hell of a film and one hell of a performance that might just make us forget he ever signed up for “Wild, Wild, West.”

Will Smith is playing Mohammed Ali, from his younger days to his older days, and okay, he’s not a spitting image for Ali, but he’s sure damn close. From the things I hear and the trailers I see, well, this has the potential to be the defining film in Will Smith’s career. It looks like a total winner, it’s coming out at Christmas, and the movie has Oscar buzz written all over it.

You’ll probably go and see this movie even if you don’t think Ali is the greatest.

Quite honestly I’ve forgotten about the story of Alexander. I mean, that was back in high school, so many moons ago, and really, do I care? Should I care? I guess there’s always that theory of we need to study history so we don’t repeat it, but should that take place on the big screen. I guess, sure, why not, but as great as a filmmaker Oliver Stone is, can we always believe his historical accounts? Who cares, this movie’s got Angelina Jolie, who hopefully will wear some revealing outfits, so I suppose I’m there.

Alrighty, so Alexander, played by Colin Farrell, is a great warrior and conqueror in a time when one really could be a great warrior and conqueror. He’s got his problems with his parents, always trying to please them, and why would a great warrior get married to anyone when he can get anyone when he’s out conquering the world, but I guess he could do worse than Roxanne (Rosario Dawson). Things aren’t always easy for a world conqueror, and the movie will most likely show this, but you can expect grand sets, giant battles, and another epic film which will probably go down as “is it better than ‘Troy?’”

Oliver Stone can probably make an epic movie as good as anyone, so this should be a winner, just probably don’t take the story as totally true.

Agent Cody Banks 2:Destination London

Movie Stats & Links

Starring: Frankie Muniz, Hannah Spearritt, Anthony Anderson, Daniel Roebuck
MPAA Rated: PG
Released By: MGM
Directed By: Kevin Allen
Produced By: David Glasser, Andreas Klein, David Nicksay, Guy Oseary, Dylan Sellers

I didn’t see the first one, although it did look fun in a kid sort of way, and this one looks to be about the same. Frankie Muniz is back as Cody Banks, kid spy. The basis for this story is that the bad guy has a mind-control device that he intends to use on all of the world leaders. Cody is brought in to get the mind-control thing before it’s too late, so he’s off to London, taking the identity of a student at an uppity boarding school. The out-of-place person is his new handler, Derek (Anthony Anderson), but he looks to add some fun to the movie.

Will Cody save the day? Will Derek make us laugh? Will Cody be able to have enough time to study for any tests he may need to take at school? Only watching the movie will tell, and depending on other things opening, I might try to catch this one.

Watch out ladies, here comes Matt Damon! The story looks the same, rich girl falls for commoner, commoner falls for rich girl, rich girl’s family won’t let them get together, commoner doesn’t care.

This one’s got Matt Damon as a ranch hand, Penelope Cruz as the rich girl, and they like each other. The problem for Matt is that he is in Mexico where he went for fun and adventure and now finds himself in jail. She promises not to see him again as long as they don’t kill him and let him go and he goes back looking for her.

Do I really need to go into this story anymore? Probably not, but Matt Damon has been coming into his own as an actor so this might just have potential.

Back for round 4, “Alien Resurrection” has that deep mystic with one of the scariest monsters to keep hitting the big screen. From what I can gather the story line kinda goes like this – Sigourney Weaver is back as Ripley, sort of. With all of the cloning stories going around, seems like this is the perfect outlet, so Ripley is a clone of Ripley, except supposedly mixed in her DNA is some Alien DNA so Ripley is just confused. The underlying problem seems to be there is a newborn Alien on a ship, and in the tradition of mama Alien, does some pretty cool damage when killing the victims. Winona Ryder plays a, hmm, a mercenary, enigmatic mechanic, bad-ass? Personally, I don’t care what Winona plays because I’ve always liked her and will probably go to see the movie just for her, who supposedly buffed up for the role. Like previous Alien films, this one no doubt will have some quality kills, that whole scary spaceship setting, and might even head for earth. Should be a winner because the Alien series has always been full of some pretty cool action, even if the story lines sometimes weren’t the greatest.

If your Christmas is filled with so much cheer and good will that it is making you sick, what better way to quench your thirst for violence than with a probably not finale where the Alien monsters and the Predator monsters wreak havoc and a small town has to figure out a way to stay alive.

Is there really a reason to preview this movie? I think probably not because you know what you are going to get, and it won’t be that original. The originals were done years ago, but hey, a Tuesday at the movies filled with violence might be a little more safe than your dinner table.

MPAA Rated: PG-13

I guess this might be a slightly more original take on the marriage movie genre, but in the end I’ll guess will have to wait and see. Anyway, the basic premise of “The Accidental Husband” has Emma (Uma Thurman) as a radio host who gives relationship advice. Patrick (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) is ready to marry, only his fiancé breaks it off after listening to Emma’s advice. Pissed at Emma, and wanting to get some payback, and with Emma about to marry her Mr. Perfect, Richard (Coling Firth), Patrick concocts already being married to Emma to mess with her life. Yup, you can guess it, and the trailer shows it, that what starts as simple payback turns into Patrick falling for Emma and Emma falling for Patrick. We know that eventually the truth has to come out, Emma will probably be furious with Patrick, and the only thing to find out is if the movie ends in romantic comedy fashion with Patrick being able to win Emma back.

I’m an Uma Thurman fan, I like a decent romantic comedy, and this one does look to have at least a slightly different twist, so I’ll probably do my best to catch it.
