I’m a fan of The Dixie Chicks. There, I said it. I admit it. I always have been. And I believe they have every right, no matter where (although, I admit, I would prefer it was not during their concert), no matter the circumstance, no matter if I agree with it or not, to say anything they want to about how our country is being run, or who is running our country, or what their favorite flavor of ice cream is. A few years ago they did just that, well, all except the ice cream (at least I don’t think they announced that), at the height when most of most folks believed what the current administration was telling them about the weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, about how we need to get in there and breed democracy to the people, and how, well, enough politicizing.

“Shut Up & Sing” is a documentary about the Dixie Chicks, and the shit they had to, and still have to deal with, because all Natalie Maines did was exercise her right as a United States’ citizen and speak what she thought. Sure, it was during a concert, but hell, she hasn’t been the first musician to do this, Bruce Springsteen has pretty much made some kind of political statement in every show I have seen of his, and she won’t be the last, but the death-threat backlash was totally uncalled for, as well as the underhanded corporate backlash on radio. If people want to protest they can stop buying their CD’s, stop requesting their songs, etc., and that’s fine. My line is when you threaten someone with death for speaking their mind.

We can debate this stuff forever, but this does look to be a good take on some of the wacky and scary shit you have to deal with when some people don’t agree with you, especially on a national scale.

That’s it for this preview! I’m The Dude on the Right!! L8R!!!
