Payback
A Movie Review

A Review by
The Dude on the Right
Well, I think my feelings about the new Mel Gibson movie, "Payback," can best be summed up by what a dude asked the lady he was with as they were leaving, "Honey, you fell asleep, didn't you?" Unfortunately, I didn't fall asleep, I watched the entire thing.

Payback kind of goes like this: Mel plays Porter, a dude who was shot by his wife and is set-up by his friend, Val. Val needed some cash to get himself back in the syndicate, and with Mel's help he got it. Well, everyone thought Mel was dead, except Mel. He made his way back to the living, stole a dude's wallet, used the dude's credit cards to get a lot of cash, a nice suit, and gun, and made his way to retrieve his 70 thousand dollars.

So, Mel hooks up with his old girlfriend, and through one bad guy, to the next bad guy, to the next bad guy, he pretty much does in the syndicate, some bad cops, and some bad ass Asians.

The movie had potential to be a kick ass action flick, with Mel flashing his pearly whites, and generally shooting lots of people and blowing shit up. But, the movie was filmed kinda like an old private eye movie, with Mel's character narrating along and leading you through the story. This had the potential to help, but instead it slowed the movie down to a crawl.

There were some bright spots in the movie, such as the dominatrix doing her stuff, Porter's ex-hooker girlfriend tricking the youngin', and when James Coburn was on the screen, but mostly the film just dragged.

So, I won't bore you anymore with this review. I guess, for me, I just wanted to see Mel in a cool action flick, and not a movie that was trying to be artsy. Unfortunately, "Payback" missed a little on both points. I would say wait for video on his one, or maybe even cable, but there are a lot of better movies out there right now. I give "Payback" 1 ½ stars out of 5.

That's it for this one, I'm The Dude on the Right!! L8R!!!
