Girls Just Want to Have Fun
A Movie/DVD Review |
|
|
Do you want to see Helen Hunt and Sarah Jessica Parker
when they were in their early prime? Do you want to torment
your daughter by showing her the styles and having her
listen to the type of music you were listening to in the
mid-1980’s? Then, you know what, go ahead and rent, Netflix,
buy, "Girls Just Want to Have Fun." Yup, the 1985 classic,
okay, maybe not a classic, is out on DVD, and Mom, what
better way to bond with your child then with a movie you
probably went to see over and over again, or at least went
to see once.
The story is as simple as can be: Sarah Jessica Parker
plays Janey. She’s a military brat, but a good girl, having
to transfer from school to school as Dad gets moved around
the country. Lynne (Helen Hunt), is the rebel kind of girl,
befriends Janey, and they both have something they love,
namely "Dance TV," and "Dance TV" is looking for some new
dancers. Janey’s dad, of course, is opposed to the idea,
Lynne convinces Janey they should try out, so we get the
good high school girl lying to her parents to achieve her
dream, and maybe even fall in love with a hunky dancing
partner.
In what might be my shortest DVD review ever, especially
since there are really no extras to be found on the DVD, I
have to say that I found "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" kinda
fun, in that mid-1980’s kind of way. The movie will not give
you any kind of surprise (yes, Dad ends up going along with
Janey’s dream), there’s a spoiled, rich girl trying to
destroy Janey’s chances, and ahhh, young love. So, I
suppose, if you are old enough and want to relive 1985, this
could be the movie for you, torment your daughter with the
fashion and the music of the time (although, scarily, the
fashion might be coming back), and in the end I’m giving
this DVD 3 stars out of 5 for being exactly what it is
supposed to be.
And, oh yea, Helen Hunt and Sarah Jessica Parker are in
their early 20’s for this movie (sure they’re playing
teenagers), but for this one Helen Hunt is the smartass, and
Sarah Jessica Parker is the goody-girl. It’s kind of fun
seeing them in their early years!
That’s it for this one! I’m The Dude on the Right!!
