Let me save you 102 minutes of movie time and the few
minutes it will take to read this review by saying: Vampire In
Brooklyn sucks!!! Don't rent it! If you don't trust my simple
opinion, then read on ...
I think my buddy Odie said it best, when referring to Tommy
Cromwell, "Oh, how the mighty have fallen". Such is the
case with Eddie Murphy. Remember Beverly Hills Cop? How about 48
Hours or Coming To America? All of them funny movies! Recall Harlem
Nights, Another 48 Hours, or Beverly Hills Cop III? Shitty movies,
right? Hmmm... What's the connection here? The funny movies were
early in Eddies movie career and the shitty ones came later when
Eddie felt he was capable or not only starring in movies but also
writing and producing them (and people think stardom won't go to
their heads). Let me be the one to break the news to you Eddie...
You suck as a writer and producer! Stick to what you know. Like
acting funny. Remember how to do that? Erraa... Ahem... Sorry about
that. I just had to vent.
The movie is supposed to be about the last vampire searching out
a half-human, half-vampire mate he believes to be living in
Brooklyn. I guess this is supposed to be the movies love angle. It
doesn't work. After finding her he must seduce her to come to the
dark side (Luke... ). I figure this is where Craven is supposed to
lend his expertise and make the movie scary. It isn't. Being that
Murphy is a comedian he is supposed to use his talents to make this
a funny movie. It's not. So if this horror-love-comedy isn't scary,
romantic or funny, what is it? It's a horribly dull movie!
I just don't understand how a great horror movie maker like Wes
Craven (A Nightmare On Elm Street, The People Under The Stairs)
could allow himself to direct such shit. There were a couple of
scenes that had some cool horror potential, but just as they get
going Murphy shows up and does a silly shtick bit. Then there was
Bassett (What's Love Got To Do With It) - what was she thinking?!? I
only can hope she was doing this movie as a favor to a friend. Who
ever that friend was I figure they owe her big!
They say no dry spell lasts forever... Let's hope that Murphy's
next movie (The Nutty Professor due out in spring of '96) puts an
end to his dry spell because Vampire In Brooklyn is another nail in
is coffin (I love clichés). If Murphy doesn't straiten up his
acting career soon he'll be bartending along side Leon Spinks. I
give Vampire In Brooklyn 0.5 of 5 stars. |
