Cool Things About the DVD

Learn French! Okay, it's only got Spanish language stuff, so forget about learning French.
Buy a New TV! Just do it already, even though the movie doesn't need it.
Buy a New Stereo! Ditto what I said about buying a new TV.
Anything Else! The extras are kind of limited, although the "making of" extra was okay.

A Review by
The Dude on the Right
If you have seen the advertisements for "Swing Vote" you have already, sort of, seen the movie, although it is just a little more complicated than Bud (Kevin Costner), due to a voting machine malfunction (actually, it was an old-folk malfunction), being one man who will cast his "re-vote," therefore deciding who will be the next President of the United States. And sure, in this world of TV news, the Internet, and world commerce, wouldn’t we prefer some intellectual in the spotlight, someone who might, now getting a second chance to vote, weigh every issue and see how the President could effect mankind? Hell no! We want Bud; an alcoholic loser who can’t keep his job at an egg farm, with an even more loser of an ex-wife, and she must be more of a loser since Bud is the one in custody of a bright, adorable, looking to create a better America yet still has to wake up her drunk-ass dad to get her to school, daughter, Molly (Madeline Carrol). And wouldn’t you know it, Paula (Kate Madison), a newscaster, learns a thing or two about journalistic ethics along the way.

Yup, you can guess how things go, namely that on every issue Bud seems to want to support, the respective Presidential candidates shift their positions, and to put it simply, the Republican President, Andy (Kesley Grammer), or at least his people, shift to things like supporting the environment and gay marriage, while Donald (Dennis Hopper), the Democratic contender, or at least his people, decide that maybe illegal immigrants are bad, and hell, let’s now flip-flop the Democratic nominee for President as Pro-Life instead of Pro-Choice, complete with one of the funniest damn things I have seen on screen in a long time.

Does the movie get a little preachy? Sure. Does Bud change his ways and realize he has the best daughter in the world, and maybe he shouldn’t spend all of his money on beer and instead understand the gravity of the situation he has been put in to? Of course.

When I saw “Swing Vote” in the theater, I enjoyed it quite a bit, but thought the movie was a tad too long, even to the point where you will utter “I get it already.” As such I felt it wasn’t really necessary to spend the big-bucks on the entire movie-going experience, and after watching the DVD in the privacy of my own dude-pad, well, I’m standing by that statement, but highly recommending the DVD as a rental, still standing behind my 4 star out of 5 rating, because even after revisiting one of the “campaign commercials” while watching the DVD, I still laughed my ass off.  And Kevin Costner, hell, he still plays a great schlub.

As far as DVD extras on the standard version, well, they’re pretty lame.  There was a nice little short on making the movie, the deleted and extended scene section reaffirmed they weren’t necessary in the original film, and I just didn’t have the time to re-watch the movie with the audio commentary so even though it might be entertaining, I really can’t comment.  Still, rent the DVD and get a good laugh, especially in this time as we inaugurate our new President.

That’s it for this one!  I’m The Dude on the Right!!  L8R!!!
