Big Cooter:
The Long Beach Dub Allstars opened with a song that I did not know, pretty surprising since most of the stuff that I knew from them was when they were known as Sublime (which was pretty long ago due to the passing of their long time lead singer, Brad Nowell). Being true to their new found song wisdom, the LBDAS's did not play any songs that they would be known for, opting more for a mix of reggae and thrash metal. The band truly confused the crowd by mixing the different beats, but they strayed no further than one or two songs from what they believed to be their takes on the Jamboree. Then again, perhaps that was the reason that they were opening the show.

The Dude on the Right:
Who don't you want to be? The first band on the main stage for a Jamboree. Not that there haven't been some good ones, it's just tough to open when the crowd hasn't arrived yet. This year Long Beach Dub Allstars had the honor and unfortunately were in the wrong place at the wrong time. They probably would have fared better on the second stage, with a smaller crowd that could have appreciated them more, but their thrash reggae just didn't seem to work on the crowd which was filling in. Sure, they seem to be trying to get out of their Sublime past, but is forgetting your past always the best thing to do? I'm not thinking so with LBDA. A smaller venue with a dedicated crowd and maybe the band would have fared better. On a giant stage with a pavilion of most uninterested people, not so much. Maybe next time.
