10 Things I Hate About You
A Movie/DVD Review |
|
 |
For some reason I wanted to see "10 Things I Hate About
You" when it was in the theaters, but I never did. This got in
the way, that got in the way, and after watching it on video, I'm
kinda sorry things got in the way, but I think, in the end, it makes
a better rental and didn't really need a big screen.
The story of "10 Things I Hate About You" is a supposed
remake of Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew." I
couldn't tell you how close it is because, yes, I have never read
it. In any case, the movie kinda goes like this, and it's pretty
predictable where it will all end up. First off you've got Cameron,
you recognize him as the dude from "Third Rock From the
Sun," Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He's new to the school and
instantly falls for Bianca (Larisa Oleynik). That's too bad because
her dad won't let her go out with anyone unless her anti-social
sister, Kat, (Julia Stiles) goes out with someone. No chance in hell
for that until Cameron and his new high school buddy hatch a plan to
have the psycho, supposedly been to jail, high school punk, Patrick
(Heath Ledger) go out with her. With no cash to bribe him they
enlist the help of Joey (Andrew Keegan), who also wants to bag
Bianca, to pay Patrick to go out with Kat so he, Joey, could score
with Bianca, but Cameron intends to be there before Joey can make
the big move.
Alright, that sounds a little confusing, but during the video it
plays out pretty simply, and if you can't guess that Cameron ends up
with Bianca and Patrick actually ends up liking Kat, even though he
got paid to take her out, well I guess I just ruined it for you, but
you can't tell me you didn't see it coming.
"10 Things I Hate About You" isn't a bad movie, and is
kind of cute in a lot of spots. No great acting awards, there didn't
need to be, but the characters are either likable as they should be
or kinda despisable as they should be. It sort of is your typical
high-school fare, and yea there is some talk of sex, some teen
drinking, but mostly harmless fun, all except for one character, but
sadly, and I hate to sound like an old fogey, I found totally
useless in her raunchy role. That character was Ms. Perky (Allison
Janney). She plays the not-giving-a-damn guidance counselor, but
that's not the problem. The problem is while she counsels students
she is writing a raunchy novel, with dialogue similar to something
like "throbbing missile of love," that totally knocks this
movie out of the "comfortable for the parents and teens to
watch together" category. I don't know if Shakespeare had a
character like this in his play, but for the movie I found her
raunchy, novel-writing stupid. Oh well, maybe I'm just getting old.
In any case, as a rental, I give "10 Things I Hate About
You" 3 stars out of 5. It would have been more, but I think it
lost its appeal as a family video with the useless Ms. Perky's
writings. Too bad. And, oh yea, stay past Letters for Cleo singing
the Cheap Trick classic "Surrender" for some sort of funny
out-takes. They aren't the greatest, but I did get a chuckle or two.
That's it for this one! I'm The Dude on the Right!!! L8R!!! |
