All the critics raped it! None of my friends wanted to
see it. It lasted maybe three weeks in the theaters. I'm talking
about the movie Mallrats.
When it came out I really wanted to see it, but I never got the
chance. I loved the movie "Clerks" which was written and directed by
Kevin Smith and produced for around $1.00 (alright, I'm
exaggerating, but by Hollywood standards it was really cheap).
Everyone loved "Clerks," and it was a big deal at some goofy
foreign film festival. So, when Universal Studios offered Smith a
couple million dollars for a budget, I couldn't wait to see what he
put together. I rented it. I liked it.
"Mallrats," like "Clerks," has terrible acting and a really weak love
plot. But, that's OK, I can deal with it because that's not what
makes this movie so good. What makes it good? Well, it's Smith's
writing. The dialogue between the characters is just more than witty
banter - it's real. For example: I've had a conversation about the
choice of contraception used by comic book heroes with my buddy
James. In the movie they talk about the same thing, but take it one
step further (could Lois Lane really have Superman 's baby). Another
example: Can anyone really see those images in that 3-D art stuff.
It's in the movie. Ever pork someone in the mall? It's in the movie
and so much more... Plus, Jay and Silent Bob (Kevin Smith) are back,
and I think they're the best part of the movie!!!
I liked the movie "Mallrats." I laughed throughout the whole thing.
"Clerks" is still a better movie, but I think "Mallrats" is worth the
cost of a rental. I give Mallrats 3/5 stars out of 5. |
