A Review by
The Dude on the Right
Jo Dee Messina burst onto the country music scene around the country with her radio friendly "Heads Carolina, Tails California" from her self-titled CD. When I first heard the song, I liked it but wondered if she was going to fall into the one-hit wonder trap that is now starting to plague country music like it is doing to the alternative/modern rock audience.

A second single came around, "You're Not in Kansas Anymore", began hitting the airwaves, and eventually I ended up with her CD. The quirky, radio-friendly songs got me to get the CD, but then the rest of the music from Ms. Messina had me throw her CD into the Dude on the Right heavy rotation bin. She mixes some great love songs, some quirky songs, and some decent up-tempo ones to keep me listening over and over.

What really sort of struck me was she didn't have too many sappy love songs. Not that that's bad, but it misses the chance for more radio play because nothing can get the airplay like a sappy love song. Most of the CD is mid to up-tempo, and even has a song co-written by Jo Dee herself on "On a Wing and a Prayer."

I have to be honest, there's nothing on this CD that will cause an upheaval in the country music writing scene, but she does put ten solid songs, mix them with a great voice and a solid musical backing, and add a little attitude - just enough - to keep her voice and style a fresh change from some of the other ladies entering the country music scene.

I guess I don't know what else to say. You've probably heard "You're Not in Kansas Anymore" and "Heads Carolina, Tails California," but I don't think those are even the best on the CD. Give a listen to the touching, alright, sappy love song "He'd Never Seen Julie Cry," the bouncy "Do You Wanna Make Something of It," and the heartfelt "I Didn't Have to Leave You." Those are my picks, but stop by your listening station at your CD store, give Jo Dee a listen, and you'll probably walk out the door with a new CD by a new artist who has the potential to make it big.

Out of ten songs, I'm diggin' nine of them and that gives Jo Dee Messina's self-titled CD a 90% on the Entertainment Ave! listenability scale.

That's it for this one, I'm the Dude on the Right!! L8R!!
