Within the first minute of the first track I was
popping out the CD to make sure it was the right one. Sure enough, I
had been listening to the track "Star Turtle 1" from Harry
Connick, Jr's latest CD named "Star Turtle." My initial
reaction, after giving the entire CD a listen, was "Wow. This
ain't no 'When Harry Met Sally' soundtrack.'" My next thought,
after listening to tracks 1, 6, 11, 15 again, was "Oh God!
Harry is dating Yoko." Those tracks have got to be the goofiest
experimental tracks that I've ever heard since the Beatles White
album. To be honest with you, I really hated those tracks and
overall really didn't care for this album. My impressions of the
album break down like this:
| Track |
Song Title |
Stu's Comments |
| 1 |
Star Turtle 1 |
Nope. Don't like it. |
| 2 |
How Do Ya'll Know |
I liked this song.
It's a swinging jazz track with a nice touch of horns. |
| 3 |
Hear Me In The Harmony |
Another good track
that combines a little piano with some "church-like"
organ. |
| 4 |
Reason to Believe |
This song's musical
style reminds me a little of "Bad Leroy Brown" with
some strong horns added. |
| 5 |
Just Like Me |
Great song for a
late-night, smoke-filled blues club on the South side of
Chicago. The song is simple in its drum rhythm and slow
weeping guitar, with a light piano line and some strings
thrown in for good measure. I liked this song a lot! |
| 6 |
Star Turtle 2 |
Harry starts this song
with some recorded dialog of two people entering a jazz club.
There is a single piano playing with a drum brush rhythm.
After entering the club you can hear people talking and
glasses clanking. I guess the place wasn't cool because the
people leave. I don't understand this track at all and as a
song I don't care for it. |
| 7 |
Little Farley |
A funk song that has a
retro edge. I can see people possibly liking this track but it
didn't do much for me. |
| 8 |
Eyes of the Seeker |
This song sounds like
a Billy Joel throw back to me. |
| 9 |
Nobody Like You to Me |
This song has a strong
late 70's retro edge. I guess it's the strong presence of an
electric piano in the song. I liked this song. |
| 10 |
Booze Hound |
Ohhh... Got to love
this songs funky guitar line and late 70's feel. Another track
that I liked! |
| 11 |
Star Turtle 3 |
Geeze... More
experimental dialog and crowed bar room sounds mixed in with
the music. If Harry want's to give us the feel of his Bourbon
Street performances, why not just record a live album. Didn't
like this one. |

Never Young |
A simple song that
reminds me of Harry's past (substituting electric piano for an
acoustic one). This song is OK. |
| 13 |
Mind on the Matter |
A
"scatt"-like song that is obviously too hip for me. |
| 14 |
City Beneath the Sea |
Another simple song
where Harry falls back to past style. This is another good
song for the late-night, smoke-filled blues bars. I liked this
one. |

Star Turtle 4 |
More experimental
crap! |
.
I'm all for people trying new and different things, but Star Turtle
has too many tracks that are a little too funky for me to enjoy. I
guess I'm not as cool as I like to think I am. This CD isn't all
that bad, but then again it ain't all that good. I wouldn't pay 15
bucks for this CD, but if I got it for Christmas I wouldn't trade it
off at a CD exchange.
I give Harry Connick, Jr's "Star Turtle" a 55% rating and I'm Stu
Gotz. Later! 'nuff said. |
