Did you know the original “Bad Boys” was released in 1995, that was like 8 years ago, and did you know that its original budget was around 23 million dollars and it made about 141 million worldwide? I didn’t, but I’m sure the folks at Columbia pictures did, hence a remake of a movie I didn’t even see.

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are back as the cool cops, funny yet getting the job done at the same time. This time the twist is that Smith’s character falls for Lawrence’s sister, and it might get in the way of their case.

This is another movie that the plot really doesn’t matter. You will go and see it because it looks funny, Lawrence and Smith had good chemistry in the original, and you know there will be cool car chases, things blowing up, and maybe some nudity.

Atonement
Movie Stats & Links
Starring: Keira Knightley, James McAvoy
MPAA Rated: R

Directed By: Joe Wright

From the best I can tell and from the synopsis I read that just seemed confusing, in the end it looks like a movie about he loves her, her loves he, she loves he, she frames he, he can’t see her, she feels bad the rest of her life while he tries to find her for the rest of his life.

As a fan of Keira Knightley I do want to see this movie, but I worry that since it is in the art-house side of December the movie might not make it to my gigaplex. In an artsy way this movie looks great, and in a sexual way this movie looks great, I just hope it might open near me, although this one might be better in the privacy of my own home.

It’s movie award time, and this movie is looking to try to snag a nomination or two, and since most nominating folks aren’t snobbish about sex, this movie might have chance.

Alright, so you get Cuba Gooding Jr. and Horatio Sanz as ladies men, but things aren’t going too well for our ladies men on dry land so the book themselves on a cruise and figure it would be a great place to pick up the ladies. The problem is that the end up on a gay cruise, filled with men looking for action, and our boys being the action. So Cuba and Horatio are freaked, want to get off the boat, all until they fall for some of the boat staff. Now they have to pretend they are gay men just looking to be friends with the dudettes, when actually, like most men, they really just want to get in their pants, and maybe have a relationship.

This movie looks kinda funny, but can a movie keep being funny after the first half hour of homophobic gay jokes? We’ll see.

Movie Stats & Links
Starring: Josh Hartnett, Aaron Eckhart, Scarlett Johansson, Hilary Swank
MPAA Rated: R
Released By: Universal Pictures
Release Date: 2006
Directed By: Brian De Palma

He’s got the reputation. He’s got Academy Award winner Hilary Swank. He’s got up-and-quickly-comer Scarlett Johansson. And he’s got Josh Hartnett. Okay, hopefully Brian De Palma pulls the best out of Josh Hartnett, but the movie does have an interesting story to start, about what the film site says is “Inspired by the most notorious unsolved murder in California history.”

It’s the 1940’s and Bucky (Josh Hartnett) and Lee (Aaron Eckhart) are police officers. They’ve been assigned to cover the death of an actress, Elizabeth Short (Mia Kirshner), whose body has pretty much been mutilated, in the largest sense of the word, and there are tons of twists and turns that seem to involve everyone’s life. Some people are good, some people are dirty, and some people are totally obsessed, but isn’t every good murder mystery supposed to do just that?

Nothing against Josh Hartnett, but the trailer isn’t looking too promising for him, amongst the other casts in the lead roles, but I’ll still try to bump this up on my “must see” list because of Scarlett and Hilary.

The Astronaut Farmer
Movie Stats & Links
Starring: Billy Bob Thornton, Virginia Madsen
MPAA Rated: PG
Released By: Warner Bros.
Directed By: Michael Polish

I always dreamt of being an astronaut too, but I guess my problem is that I’m not a farmer, or a Farmer for that matter.

Anyway, Billy Bob Thornton is Charles Farmer. He was in line to be an astronaut but family stuff got in his way. He still wanted to end up in space so he set out on his life quest to build a rocket and become an astronaut. It seems the government isn’t too keen on someone being an astronaut on their own, so they try to put an end to Charles’ dream, but Charles is a stubborn man, with the love of a good woman, Audie (Virginia Madsen), and great kids.

This looks like a feel-good movie for the entire family, especially for the kids that don’t think they are too cool anymore, and for anyone who has a dream to fulfill.

Arlington Road
Movie Stats & Links
Starring: Tim Robbins, Jeff Bridges
MPAA Rated: R
Released By: Columbia Pictures
Directed By: Mark Pellington

What would you do if you found out your goody-two-shoes neighbor is really an architect for some terrorist bombings? That seems to be the premise of “Arlington Road.,” where Jeff Bridges finds out that his neighbor, Tim Robbins, has been blowing up buildings. Nobody seems to believe him, and he doesn’t really have the proof to get the feds involved, but Jeff seems to know, Tim finds out, Tim kidnaps Jeff’s kid, and the action sequence is on.

This looks like a decent thriller type film, but I’m kind of worried about the ending falling apart. I see Jeff saving his kid, saving a big-ol’ building from blowing up, and Tim Robbins ending up dead or being caught. I hope I didn’t ruin it for myself.

I’ll wait and see on this one.

Anger Management
Movie Stats & Links
Starring: Adam Sandler, Jack Nicholson, Marisa Tomei
MPAA Rated: PG-13
Released By: Columbia Pictures
Directed By: Peter Segal

As Adam Sandler seems to continue his trek to be considered a respected actor and not just a joke that’s been played too many times, now comes “Anger Management,” teaming him with Jack Nicholson and including Marisa Tomei, both respected in their profession. Can Adam prove himself to be in their league, or is he his normal over-the-top self? Only the movie will tell, but for now I can tell you this…

“Anger Management” has Sandler sentenced to take some, well, anger management therapy, after an altercation on an airplane. Assigned to him is Nicholson, who moves in with Sandler, and begins his twisted therapy. At first Sandler seems to do his best to keep his cool, but then Nicholson pushes him over the edge and hilarity is supposed to ensue.

The movie does look to have potential, especially Nicholson’s character, and Sandler has the potential to team up well with him, but for me it will be difficult to take Sandler’s character seriously, especially when to me he will always be Happy, Billy, and Pip. Hopefully he can make me forget them.

The Bucket List

Directed By: Rob Reiner

You know what? Chicken Butt! Actually, though, when I saw the trailer for “The Bucket List,” I found a film I think I am really looking forward to seeing, and I’m guessing I will cry during it. Hell, the trailer nearly made me weepy.

The story basically goes that Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman play two dudes on their way to die. The thing is they both have a list of things they always wanted to do before they “kicked the bucket,” and Edward (Jack) has the money to make the things on the list happen, but Carter (Morgan), has the “down-to-Earth” person-ess to get Edward to remember, and reunite, with the family he has lost.

This movie has two fabulous actors in roles, namely Jack Nickolson and Morgan Freeman, so how can you ever count them out in a movie, especially together, and the trailer looks like they meld together very well. And then you have the tear-jerker story of two dudes facing their deaths and being able to realize dreams of what they always wanted to do.

I can probably already say that I will laugh, I will cry, and I will love this movie, just from the trailer. I hope the movie lives up to the trailer.

I hate to put things like this, but for a dude, this movie is simply about hot dudettes trying to surf with the big boys. The dudettes look hot, the dudes, well, look like beach loving, surfer-dudes, and does anything else really matter. Dudettes in skimpy outfits, dudes showing their six-packs, and a movie where dudettes are trying to make a name for themselves. Yes, even as simple as things seem, and as weak as the movie seems, I’m planning on being there for the opening weekend. Sometimes you just look forward to a movie that looks, well, simple, and gratuitous for what it’s worth. Sadly it’s rated PG-13, which means it’s just bikinis and no one getting naked. Oh well, you have to take the good with the bad.

Release Date: 2005
Directed By: Ang Lee

Well, I’ll give Ang Lee credit for the varying projects he has chosen to direct. You may have heard about him around the “Sense and Sensibility” time, but for most folks, if I say he directed “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” you would say you saw or heard of that film. He also directed “Hulk,” so we know he’s sensible, crouching, huge, and now, well, he’s directing a film that is catching lots of buzz because, first, it’s supposed to be a great movie, and second, it’s about two cowboys who, as one of the IMDB synopsis’ puts it, unexpectedly forge a lifelong connection. That’s the politically correct version to say that it’s the 1960’s and they are gay. The trailer shows this fact, why can’t they just say it?

Anyway, the movie is set at a time when being homosexual isn’t really a lifestyle you can tell your friends and neighbors about, so our two dudes, Jack (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Ennis (Heath Ledger) go about keeping their true love secret while living the lives of hetero’s.

Visually the movie looks great, and I’m sure some will have problems with the story subject, but in any case, this is sure to create buzz both because of it being a great movie, but also because of the topic. You’ll have to make it your own call if you want to see this one.
