I didn’t see the first one, although it did look fun in a kid sort of way, and this one looks to be about the same. Frankie Muniz is back as Cody Banks, kid spy. The basis for this story is that the bad guy has a mind-control device that he intends to use on all of the world leaders. Cody is brought in to get the mind-control thing before it’s too late, so he’s off to London, taking the identity of a student at an uppity boarding school. The out-of-place person is his new handler, Derek (Anthony Anderson), but he looks to add some fun to the movie.

Will Cody save the day? Will Derek make us laugh? Will Cody be able to have enough time to study for any tests he may need to take at school? Only watching the movie will tell, and depending on other things opening, I might try to catch this one.

Watch out ladies, here comes Matt Damon! The story looks the same, rich girl falls for commoner, commoner falls for rich girl, rich girl’s family won’t let them get together, commoner doesn’t care.

This one’s got Matt Damon as a ranch hand, Penelope Cruz as the rich girl, and they like each other. The problem for Matt is that he is in Mexico where he went for fun and adventure and now finds himself in jail. She promises not to see him again as long as they don’t kill him and let him go and he goes back looking for her.

Do I really need to go into this story anymore? Probably not, but Matt Damon has been coming into his own as an actor so this might just have potential.

Back for round 4, “Alien Resurrection” has that deep mystic with one of the scariest monsters to keep hitting the big screen. From what I can gather the story line kinda goes like this – Sigourney Weaver is back as Ripley, sort of. With all of the cloning stories going around, seems like this is the perfect outlet, so Ripley is a clone of Ripley, except supposedly mixed in her DNA is some Alien DNA so Ripley is just confused. The underlying problem seems to be there is a newborn Alien on a ship, and in the tradition of mama Alien, does some pretty cool damage when killing the victims. Winona Ryder plays a, hmm, a mercenary, enigmatic mechanic, bad-ass? Personally, I don’t care what Winona plays because I’ve always liked her and will probably go to see the movie just for her, who supposedly buffed up for the role. Like previous Alien films, this one no doubt will have some quality kills, that whole scary spaceship setting, and might even head for earth. Should be a winner because the Alien series has always been full of some pretty cool action, even if the story lines sometimes weren’t the greatest.

If your Christmas is filled with so much cheer and good will that it is making you sick, what better way to quench your thirst for violence than with a probably not finale where the Alien monsters and the Predator monsters wreak havoc and a small town has to figure out a way to stay alive.

Is there really a reason to preview this movie? I think probably not because you know what you are going to get, and it won’t be that original. The originals were done years ago, but hey, a Tuesday at the movies filled with violence might be a little more safe than your dinner table.

When The Dude on the Left and I were at a movie one of the trailers for “Across the Universe” came on, pretty much the artsy and dancing one that didn’t tell a damn thing about the story. He leaned over and pretty much said “There is no way in hell I’m seeing that movie.” Sure, even if he had seen the trailer that sort of tells the story, he still wouldn’t have any interest, but I might catch it depending what else opens.

From the better trailer we see “Across the Universe” is a musical, psychedelic kind of film set in the 1960’s. Jude (Jim Sturgess) comes to the good old United States and what else will make a dude crazy? Well, love of course. He falls for Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood), but it’s the time of Vietnam so what better way to introduce a musical than by being peace activists.

The movie does look interesting, I suppose, but not really my (and definitely not The Dude on the Left’s) cup of tea. Watch the trailer and you will probably know if it might be your cup of tea.

13 Going on 30
Movie Stats & Links
Starring: Jennifer Garner, does anyone else really matter?
MPAA Rated: PG-13
Released By: Columbia Pictures
Directed By: Gary Winick
Produced By: Gary Winick

The ever beautiful Jennifer Garner who should do herself a favor and hook-up with a man like me, or better yet, me, stars as Jenna. She just turned 13 and was also humiliated, so her wish is that she was older. The next morning she wakes up and finds herself 30 years old and living with her boyfriend. Her problem is that she thinks she is 13, and has no recollection of the past seventeen years. She has a job, friends, and needs to find her old best friend to figure out what the hell is going on. That’s about the gist of things.

Now, a lot of people are comparing this to the wonderful movie “Big” where Josh wishes he were big, and then next day he is. The difference here is that Josh wakes up the next day still being a little kid but now in a grown-up body. With this movie Jenna wakes up acting like a 13 year old in a 30 year old body, yet has built a life getting to 30, only she doesn’t remember it. I’m guessing something traumatic happened the night before, or maybe a few too many margaritas, and this has blocked her memories transporting her back to being 13. Too much to think about, but it’s got Jennifer Garner so I plan on being there.

Release Date: July 7, 2006
Directed By: Richard Linklater

I will say this for the trailer, it looks like they made a movie that “looks” funky. They did some weird animation over actual footage, or something like that, to create a graphic novel look to a dark story.

From what I can gather there’s a problem in the drug world and an undercover cop has a hard time dealing with it. The web site synopsis says something about “a cautionary tale of drug use” and another synopsis states that, in the near future, lots of people are being recruited by the government to spy on their friends in the name of security and the drug war.

The movie does look kind of cool, and it’s got a pretty bizarre cast, I just hope the wacky animation doesn’t take away from what looks like a good story.

A Lot Like Love
Movie Stats & Links
Starring: Ashton Kutcher, Amanda Peet
MPAA Rated: PG-13
Released By: Touchstone Pictures
Directed By: Nigel Cole
Produced By: Armyan Bernstein, Kevin J. Messick

Here comes the onslaught of Ashton Kutcher, whether you want it or not. First you are getting him in “Guess Who,” and now in “A Lot Like Love.” Both are of the romantic comedy genre, which I guess came along because of his “fantastic” work in “Just Married.”

For this one Ashton Kutcher is Oliver and Amanda Peet is Emily. For years they’ve been best friends and lovers, but Emily just won’t let this relationship last because she had to make the first move. Their lives take them in separate directions, but Oliver is miserable without Emily. Now that Oliver is ready to make the first move, well, he finds Emily engaged and now he must find a way to win her back. Blah, blah, blah.

I usually like Amanda Peet, and Ashton is okay, but the story just looks generic. It’s scheduled to go against Nicole Kidman in “The Interpreter,” so it will be a toss up which one I see.

A Good Year
Movie Stats & Links
Starring: Albert Finney, Russell Crowe
MPAA Rated: PG-13
Released By: 20th Century Fox
Directed By: Ridley Scott
Produced By: Ridley Scott

This movie just looks like a nice story about remembering your past. In it Russell Crowe is Max Skinner. In England he is a great investment dude. And in growing up, he has forgotten a lot of when he was a youngin’. Suddenly he inherits the vineyard of his Uncle, and not having an interest in running the vineyard or owning the property, he at first looks to sell it. But upon returning to the vineyard, Max starts to remember things that were special in his childhood, meets a chick, and gets on with his life.

I read a couple of reviews of the book this movie is based off of, and they tell some different things from the trailer, but in any case, Russell Crowe looks to be in a great role, and the story looks nice enough to make a chick-flick movie that might be okay for dudes with a sensitive side.

We’ve got Nicolas Cage playing a Private Eye, hired by this old lady, to find out if this 8mm film her dead husband had in his safe truly depicts some horrible atrocity, or if it is fake. So, Cage has to watch, and watch, and watch this film, try to find out who shot it, and solve the mystery that turns into gunfights and chases.

It looks to be a pretty cool psychological thriller, with lots of action especially if Joel Schumacker is involved. Cage always entertains in these styles of films, so barring a catastrophe this should be a winner.
